The First Step to Healing: Stop Fixing, Start Reconnecting

We live in a culture obsessed with fixing what feels broken. If something hurts, we numb it. If something’s off, we push harder. If our health falters, we scramble for the next diet, supplement, or treatment plan.

However, the truth is that healing is not about fixing. Fixing assumes you are broken, and you are not broken. You are patterned.

The Problem with “Fixing”

When we approach healing with the mindset of fixing, we unconsciously reinforce the belief that there is something wrong with us. That we are defective, damaged, or less-than.

This belief keeps many people stuck in a cycle of striving and self-blame:

  • Trying every new protocol, but never feeling enough.
  • Waiting for the “perfect time” to start healing, but never actually beginning.
  • Feeling like failure when old patterns resurface.

The result? We stay in survival mode, disconnected from our own wisdom and power.

Reconnection: A Different Path
Reconnection is a gentler, yet far more profound, approach to healing. It shifts the focus from what’s “wrong” with us to what’s waiting to be remembered.

Reconnection means:

  • Remembering your purpose: What makes you uniquely you.
  • Honoring your “why”: Healing for deeper reasons than appearances or short-term goals.
  • Noticing your patterns: Recognizing that habits and survival responses are not flaws, but adaptations.

The beautiful thing about patterns is that they can shift. When we reconnect with our body and nervous system, we create the conditions for those patterns to evolve.

A Story About Starting Anyway
I once worked with a woman who waited months before starting care. She told herself she would begin when work slowed down, when her kids’ sports season ended, when life got less stressful. In other words, she was waiting for the “perfect time.”

However, there is no perfect time. Life rarely gives us a clean slate.

Eventually, she came in because she felt so depleted and disconnected that she couldn’t wait any longer. And something powerful happened: once she took that first step, the momentum began to build.

She started noticing small shifts. Choosing a walk at lunch instead of scrolling her phone. Adding more vegetables to her meals. Going to bed a little earlier. Those tiny actions stacked, and before long, she wasn’t just surviving, she was healing.

Her story is a reminder that the right time isn’t something you wait for--it’s something you create by taking the first aligned step.

Why the Nervous System Matters
Patterns don’t live only in our thoughts. They live in our bodies, in our posture, our breath, our muscle tone. Years of stress and trauma shape the way our nervous system functions. For many people, this looks like living in a constant state of fight-or-flight: tight muscles, shallow breathing, poor sleep, poor recovery/healing, low energy, irritability, and anxiety.

The nervous system is the gateway to healing. When it feels safe, the body can shift from survival into repair and growth. That’s why awareness practices like breath resets, gentle movement, and affirmations are so powerful. They signal safety to the body. Over time, these signals re-pattern the nervous system itself.

Practical Steps to Begin Reconnecting
You don’t need a 20-step protocol to start your healing journey. Begin with presence, not perfection. Here are a few gentle practices:

  1. Breath Reset: Pause three times a day. Inhale deeply through your nose, then exhale slowly through your mouth. Repeat three times. This simple act can shift your nervous system out of stress mode.
  2. Awareness Check-In: Ask yourself, How am I feeling physically, emotionally, spiritually? Notice without judgment.
  3. Posture Scan: When stress rises, check your shoulders, jaw, and breath. Soften what you can.
  4. Habit Stacking: Pair a small new action with an existing habit. For example, after lunch, take a five-minute walk or listen to a guided meditation.
  5. Affirmation Practice: Choose a phrase that feels true and supportive, like I am healing or My body knows how to find balance. Repeat it daily.

These steps help to create safety and awareness, so your body can begin to shift.

Healing Is a Series of Small Choices
Healing is not a single event. It’s a series of small, aligned choices that add up over time:

  • Choosing connection over isolation.
  • Choosing presence over autopilot.
  • Choosing gentle awareness over self-criticism.

Each choice is an opportunity to repattern, to move out of survival and to reconnect with who you are at your core.

A Vision of Transformation
Imagine this: instead of feeling stuck in fight-or-flight, you feel grounded and calm. Your energy is steady. You trust your body. You respond to stress with resilience rather than reactivity. You sleep deeply. You show up for your family and work with more presence.

This isn’t a fantasy. It’s what happens when the nervous system feels safe, when we stop chasing fixes and start embracing reconnection.
