Level 2 of NSA Care: TRANSFORM

The Foundation:
During May, we explored Level 1 of Network Spinal Analysis (NSA): Discovery Care. Level 1 of Care achieves less tension in the spine, ligaments, muscles, tendons, and nerves.  Patients have better spinal health and a tremendously improved capacity to heal.  They have substantially decreased sympathetic (fight-or-flight) physiology and the ability to access parasympathetic (calming, healing) physiology consistently.  They often have noticed a breath wave (the Somato-Respiratory wave) moving through their spine.  Because they have disarmed the body from fight-or-flight physiology, they often report a more peaceful mind.

Teaching the Nervous System a Skill
In most traditional chiropractic techniques, the chiropractor is releasing tension, and the patient is dependent on that doctor to do the work for their body.  In NSA, we TEACH the nervous system to release tension especially during times of stress, but also to dissipate tension on a continuous basis (outside the office, in every-day life).  In Level 1 of care, the brain/body also starts to engage patterns to shift the nervous system from the over-used, often dysfunctional neurological patterning to one of more balance and effectiveness.

Level 2: Transform
Neurologically, the body will move from Level 1 strategies to Level 2, a time of TRANSFORM.  The brain can use its new NSA-learned strategies (Discover Care) to change the spine on a deeper level.  You will notice as a part of this process, the doctors hold contacts on your spine for longer time periods.  You may feel tension building around the areas where the contacts are being held on the spine.  When one area of the spine has changed at a deep level, other areas must adapt and the whole system must work at a different and new level. This creates increased adaptability and even deeper changes in the nervous system.  In transform, the nervous system takes this increased adaptability within the nervous system and creates the foundation for the SomatoPsychic (SP) wave.  With the SP wave, the nervous system creates synchronized muscular movements to dissipate even more tension and move in increasing patterns of complexity (1).  This furthers the reorganization process, helps the body confront physical or emotional trauma on deeper levels, and enhances one’s sense of wellbeing tremendously.

With the neurological advancement of the SP wave, the ability to listen to one’s own needs, handle stress more effectively, increase wellness-related activity (exercise, healthy food intake, devotion to mindfulness) and create healthy changes within one’s life expands greatly (reference 1995 study by University of CA Irvine Anatomy, Neurobiology, and Sociology Departments).  The body is able to use its own tension to create shifts and CHANGE.  Tony Robbins (the well-renown transformation specialist) is a huge fan of NSA and the SP wave for its ability to provide someone with the energy to create desired life changes.  The SP wave starts as a stretching type of response and often patients will sit up on the chiropractic table to integrate the mid-spine, rib cage, and chest into the spinal wave motion.  Patients may even rest on their back during adjustments to integrate the coordinated motions of the spinal wave.  Because of the level of neurological reorganization happening, this is often when patients have deep and big awareness of incongruences within their life and where they would like to make changes.  The increased level of momentum and energy within the body can make a change that at one time seemed difficult, happen with ease and even a sense of effortlessness.

External vs. Internal
The SP wave may be very visible for an “external” person.  External people process the world in often a very vocal or visible way.  Their SP wave may be very visible while they are getting adjusted—lots of movement or even audible sighs as they release tension and process stress.  For an “internal” person, the SP wave may be less visible.  Internal people process the world by taking the information “internally.”  They are often less expressive of how they feel while they are processing.  After this has happened for them, visible changes in the wave and processing may occur.  The SP wave may be experienced for them in a less visible way but still provides all of the benefits mentioned above.

The Rhythm of Transform:
Just like Level 1 or Discovery Care has a unique rhythm to our emotional state, so does the Season of Transform, consisting of Stages 4-7 in the 12 Stages of Healing.  During Discovery Care, the mind-body connection is enhanced and a rhythm for movement has been created. The mental state of suffering has been released and a new awareness of stress-related tension patterns has been gained.  Stage 4 involves reclaiming power. The previous stages no longer serve life goals. This is the moment you say "I have had enough of this; I deserve more than this." There is a newly found sense of courage and strength to reclaim life.  Stage 5 allows the merging with your shadow or illusions that you have let play in your mind repeatedly.  There is a knowingness that there is more to body sense than physical pain.  Stages 6 and 7 are about building up energy or tension in the mind and body to break through old patterns. During these stages you typically experience a discharge of the muscular system that can present as coughing, sneezing, crying, screaming, or laughing. There is a sense of accomplishment, satisfaction, peace, and inner-strength.  We facilitate the movement through stages with enhanced strategies by utilizing Somato-Respiratory Integration exercises.

Once We Have Level 2 Strategies, Do We Always Receive a Level 2 Adjustment?
Level 2 Transform strategies are exciting.  As mentioned before, Transform strategies often lead to beautiful changes within someone’s life.  Realize there are times when we may be in Transform and ready to move areas of our health, wellness, and lives forward in big ways.  There are other times (especially during times of stress or big transitions within our lives) that Discovery is necessary and important!  It is highly appropriate to move between the Levels of NSA Care (and the Stages of Healing) on a regular basis, but remember, once your nervous system learns Transform strategies, they are an ingrained tool for the nervous system to utilize and do not disappear!
